5.0 out of 5 stars New Take on the Oregon Trail

Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2025

This tightly written story packs a lot of adventure and romance in its pages. The author provides a fascinating – and historically accurate – glimpse into this Oregon Trail saga, and gives us a number of characters to interest us. Let’s hope for a sequel.

GREAT BOOK CLUB EVENT

I had a great opportunity in January to meet with a book club in Peachtree City, Georgia. My connection to the out-of-state club was through my dear sister-in-law who attends a monthly book club which gathers to review and discuss chosen titles. The lead up to the January meeting began way back in 2025 around August and resulted in a meeting with the group of ladies pictured below whom I dubbed my Peachtree City Peaches.

(I’m the tall guy). The women had read Turning Points and were well-informed. Several ladies brought their paperback copies, and I was glad to autograph each one. We met for about two hours, and enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and delicious cherry cobbler prepared by my wife and her sister.

In addition to recalling specific scenes and favorite characters in the current novel, we talked about the sequel (working title: Holding On) that is underway. In fact, I asked two of the members to read different versions of the opening chapter of the sequel. I was impressed by how well they read the pages without a rehearsal. The group’s feedback about the opening chapters will be a help as I fine-tune the story.

The gathering was such a great experience I’m pursuing how to contact more book clubs. If you know of a book club in your area, please let me know who to contact.

Cloaks

Some doors are better left unopened . . . .

All Bess wanted was to find a different way out of Mr. Heldrick’s basement. She didn’t expect that the door she opened would lead to another world or that, within minutes, she’d be running for her life from cloaked, knife-wielding riders.

If she had, she would have taken the stairs. . . .

“A treasure!” —Hugo, Nebula, and Locus award winner Mary Robinette Kowal

Pandir Decloaked

Heldrick and Grayvle put at risk their century-long plan to break the Citadel’s hold when they rescue Estrienn, a young woman caught traveling after curfew.  But when a neighbor girl is taken, and Heldrick agrees to let Estrienn go into the Citadel after her, they trigger an event that could change everything.

And Estrienn, it seems, has secrets of her own. . . .

The Girl in the Cloak

When Estrienn is caught reporting to Norvenmot in a seeming betrayal, her only opportunity for redemption is to obtain crucial information from Norvenmot and deliver it to Heldrick and Grayvle.

But while seeking that information, she unwittingly turns up a secret that threatens disaster for every person on the planet. With Norvenmot hatching plots and Heldrick struggling to retain power, she can only hope she gets her information to Heldrick before it is too late.

Karen McCullough’s New Novel

As some of you may know, I meet with fellow authors once a month to talk about writing, publishing, and marketing. Several of those writers are Founding Members of The Art of Writing, LLC, for publishing and promoting the works of its members. You can visit individual pages on this site for more details and links to order books, including DK McLaughlin’s new steamy romance novel, Angel, and author Paul S. Doizé’s new novel,  A12 MONTHS WITHOUT YOU Part 2.

But for November, the new featured novel is Unleashed for Murder by longtime author Karen McCullough.  Following is a blurb about the new, just released novel, plus links to learn more and to order the eBook and/or paperback versions.

Murder crashes the pet products trade show…

“The Pet Palace booth is the undisputed crown jewel of the pet products trade show, and its owners, two retired pro football players, bring their own brand of star power to the sale of high-end, luxury gear.

When one of them dies at the show, however, he leaves behind jealous competitors, angry suppliers, a line of women he pumped and dumped, and a fiancée he may not even have known about.
Heather McNeil’s job as assistant to the director of the D.C. Market and Commerce Center is mostly about keeping events running smoothly, dealing with disputes, accidents, and conflict. She never signed on for solving murders, but sometimes it’s part of the job, too.
Amidst the plethora of cozy canine couture, upscale pet feeding stations, slick kitty litter boxes, and unmentionable lizard foods, Heather has to sort through the human emotions at play and follow the clues to a killer, all while dealing with her own personal heartbreak.”

About Angel …

She’s the innocent from a convent school.
He’s the ruthless billionaire who owns everything—except her.

Stephanie Blaire just graduated from Our Lady of Mercy, the all-girls Catholic boarding school and college where she’s spent her entire life under the watchful eyes of nuns, while her parents were missionaries in West Africa. Her new boss?
Xander Zhukov—CEO, billionaire, and devastatingly handsome.
